Opera gloves at Koché, huge, huge, socially-distanced hats at LaQuan Smith and Coconut Girl-style dolphin earrings at Coach — the vibes of accessories on runways were all over the place this season, but in the best way.
And where we’ve delighted in shopping for a new season coat or everyday dress that suits our style post-lockdown, the glorious display at Fashion Month reminds us just how much we miss relishing in the excess of accessories — and who knows, this may just be the year that we’re converted to chain belts once again.
Read on for our favourite standout accessory moments from spring ’22 runways, set to define the year ahead.

Chain gang
One of the more controversial trends to come back from the pits of the 2000s, the return of chain belts was cemented when given the stamp of approval by Olivia Rodrigo. This season, Chanel shows us how to wear them best — over a cutout skirt, of course.

Clear your head
Ok, so when the sun is shining it’s recommended that you SPF your scalp (yes, actually!) so those more susceptible to burning may want to skip this trend. But as far as fashion is concerned, visors are back, along with polos and other retro uniform motifs.

The wild side (eye)
When choosing eyewear, it’s usually come down to a simple question of ‘big or small’ — oversized Olsen goggles or itty bitty Matrix specs. Now, though, we’re seeing a shift towards colourful lenses, thanks to brands like Louis Vuitton showing off-kilter shapes that bring some much-needed joy to optics.

Family jewels
Along with opera gloves, runways were adorned with larger-than-life jewels, reminiscent of the kind you’d spot in antique stores or, say, a treasure chest. Perhaps the return to partying after lockdowns will see a major surge of dazzling statement accessories just like these emerald beauties spotted at Giambattista Valli.

Layer up
One necklace, even two, is simply not enough in 2021. Take note from Stella McCartney and Chanel by mixing and matching gold, silver and bronze for a grungier feel.

Let the clogs out
Love them or hate them, clogs continue their reign with a glorious display at Givenchy, where glamorous looks were given an edge with chunky leather clogs.

Socks to be you
And what better to wear your clogs with than some statement hosiery? Whether you’re channelling Princess Diana with her chunky tube socks or Bianca Jagger at Studio 54 in some lurex leggings, hosiery is an easy and (mostly) affordable way to up the ante of any outfit, just peep these looks at the Miu Miu show.
