Fret not if you’re neither oily nor acne prone, this is just a base recipe.

Later on, we’ll see how we can tweak the ingredients of our DIY primer to cater to different skin types. I made sure to break down the primer ingredients list for you to understand what to expect from your natural makeup primer and what will need modifying based on your insensitivities or intolerances.

What You’ll Need:

  • Spray bottle
    • I love using spray primers because it’s a much more sanitary dispenser, but if you prefer brushing on your DIY primers grab a glass jar instead. If you do choose to go with a glass jar, make sure to dip your brush only once and wash it before every use.
  • 7 tbsp distilled water
    • Water will be our carrier ingredient, allowing for a water-based and fluid consistency perfect for a spray bottle. If you think you overdid it with your glycerin and oils, feel free to add another tablespoon of water.
  • 5 tbsp witch hazel
    • Witch hazel does an amazing job of soothing inflammation and alleviating irritation, and combats acne while it’s at it.
    • There are skin types that dry out with witch hazel. This will be one of the ingredients we’ll switch up with later on.
  • 3 tbsp glycerin
    • Glycerin is a master of hydration when it comes to skin care, making it a popular ingredient in cosmetics. With continued use for approximately two weeks, we can expect smoother and supple skin. We can’t do without glycerin in our DIY primer since this will help smooth the texture of our skin for better makeup application.
  • 3 drops tea tree oil
    • Tea tree oil is more popular for its acne-fighting properties, but it can also soothe inflamed skin and is an all around cleaner keeping skin healthy.
    • You can opt out of this essential oil if your skin reacts negatively to tea tree oil.

Step 1: Combine the Water, Witch Hazel, and Gylcerin Into a Glass Bowl or Cup

Combine the water, witch hazel, and glycerin into a glass container. We add the ingredients with thicker consistency first for the other ingredients to mix more easily later on like how we separate dry and wet goods when we bake.

By using a glass cup now, it will be easier to transfer the DIY primer into a spray bottle later on than if you used a glass bowl.

Step 2: MIX Thoroughly Until It Becomes a Cohesive Mixture

At first, your DIY primer will look white and murky, but it will turn into a clear, water-like consistency if you keep mixing for approximately three minutes. If after a while that consistency is still thick, try to add water in small increments until you get the thickness you want.

Step 3: Add the Tea Tree Oil Into the Mixture and Continue Mixing

Add the tea tree oil into your DIY homemade primer and continue mixing. The mixture should still be clear and colorless.

Step 4: Transfer Your DIY Makeup Primer Into a Spray Bottle or Jar of Your Choice

Transfer your DIY primer into a spray bottle and shake once again to make sure that all ingredients are blended.

DIY Natural Primer for Dry Skin

If you suffer from dry skin, mix in four tablespoons of glycerin instead of three. Instead of adding three drops of tea tree oil, incorporate three to four drops of lavender oil which is hydrating and carries a delicate scent.

You can opt out of the witch hazel and add aloe vera, which is just as soothing but is more hydrating and is less likely to dry out your skin.

DIY Natural Primer for Very Oily Skin

If you have very oily skin but aren’t acne-prone, this DIY primer recipe for you. Retain 5 tablespoons of witch hazel, which is a natural astringent and causes pores to shrink, but lessen your glycerin to one to two tablespoons. You’ll end up with a more watery, and less slick DIY primer.

You can get add a moisturizing oil since oily skin is the result of our skin’s over-correction for dehydrated skin. By making sure our skin is always hydrated, our skin will produce less sebum over time. However, if you prefer oil-free solutions, you need not add any essential oils at all.
