While it’s easy to complain abut wearing a face mask — and the sporadic chin rash that comes with it — isn’t it more productive to spread some Aquaphor on your face and reframe your perspective? Find a cute silk bandana and think of the necessary public service as an opportunity to accessorise. Lean all the way in, like the forward-thinking nail artists on Instagram sparking the next big style trend: matching their manicures to their face coverings.

Editorial nail artist Miss Pop, who’s based in New York City, recently designed a DIY manicure to match her favourite leopard-print face mask — and her followers were obsessed. “After I posted that Instagram, I received an outpouring of positive responses — so many DMs and comments.” Miss Pop says. “It’s funny because, for the nail art, I just riffed — the design doesn’t have to be too matchy-matchy. I just feel so inspired by all my neighbours here in New York who are wearing masks everywhere, and doing it so fashionably.”

Miss Pop’s inspiration came from her reusable Slip silk face mask, which features two-toned leopard spots. “I used a black and white polish, both limited-edition shades by Chanel,” Miss Pop tells us of her process. “But I also really love the idea of a dark-chocolate brown and an eggshell white pairing.”
Nail artist Gina Edwards endorsed a bright and happy print: polka dots. Edwards, a brand ambassador for KISS, used the label’s square-tip press-ons for length, then painted the art right on top.
Here, Edward coordinated her star-print manicure with her mask with just two OPI polishes she had lying around the house: Black Onyx for the base and Ornament To Be Together for the stars.
NYC-based nail artist Mei Kawajiri proves that you don’t need a fancy designer face covering to cop the matching look. If you have a pack of surgical disposable masks at home — go with a blue, or even better, a candy-pink manicure.
Cassandre Marie, a nail artist and content creator out of Seattle, gave us fresh floral nail-art inspiration, matched precisely to the design on her cute reusable Reformation face mask.
