New York Fashion Week looked very different this season. Despite many designers pulling out of Fashion Month altogether in light of the global pandemic, some found creative ways to present their collections as scheduled this past week (with proper safety measures in place), and the standout accessory trend proved to be — you guessed it — the fashion face mask.

But the masks themselves, which were decorated with graphic prints, gemstones, and 3D floral appliqués, are only half the story. From a beauty perspective, the makeup, specifically the creative approach to eyeliner and eyeshadow, was a common thread throughout the most buzzed-about presentations, from Christian Siriano to Chromat. To see the best makeup-and-mask pairings of the week, scroll through the gallery, ahead.

Electric Eyeshadow

At the Zero + Maria Cornejo show, makeup artist Dick Page gave the models vinyl cobalt-painted eyelids. Cooler still, Page’s blending technique was purposefully imperfect, with an almost scribbled effect.

Floating Crease

The “floating crease” is a graphic eyeliner trend that makes a statement while still feeling fresh and minimalist. Take inspiration from the Chromat presentation — led by makeup artist Fatima Thomas — and grab an aqua-blue pencil, etch a wing from the outer corner of your eye, then curve it up and around your crease.

Graphic Cat Eye

Christian Siriano’s presentation, with makeup by Vincent Oquendo, takes a standard cat-eye and levels it up with contrasting yellow eyeshadow.

Oquendo gave other models at the Siriano show a variation on the floating crease before colouring sunflower-yellow shadow inside the lines.
But if all you’ve got is a black pencil, you can copy the final Siriano look, which consisted of just floating liner and worked well to complement the rest of the monochromatic look: red wide-brim hat, puff-sleeved top, and, of course, matching face mask.
