In tense times like these, we all need little moments of calm to get us through the day. That can take the form of something quite involving like meditation, or exercise, or your skincare routine. It can also be something shorter, which requires less effort or concentration but still eases the stress and pressure of 2020 (if just for a moment). And it comes in video form.

Whether you’re after satisfying before and afters, spine-tingling ASMR or soothing background noise, we’ve rounded up our favourite videos which can act as a break in your day, bringing you at least 10 minutes of respite. Happy watching.

Antique restorations

Restoration videos are a double whammy – you get the immense satisfaction of the before and after, as well as the ASMR-inducing sounds of the restorer’s handiwork.

Baking

Like many of the activities in these videos, baking is often only relaxing in theory – more often than not it’s stressful and messy and frustrating and you end up covered in flour with little to show for it. Watching someone else (successfully) bake is a whole different ball game. Especially when they’re beautifully executing something like a Swiss roll, which has been the downfall of many a GBBO contestant in years gone by. Be warned though, it will probably make you hungry.

Blackheads

So this is obviously Not For Everyone but if you enjoy popping blackheads, you’ve no doubt already discovered the soothing, satisfying joy of watching videos of it on YouTube. This compilation is clearly popular, with 36 million views at the time of writing.

Deep cleaning

I’m not entirely sure what’s so relaxing about watching someone really, thoroughly clean their lovely home space… If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say it’s equal parts relief at not cleaning yourself and aspiration that maybe you, too, could have spotless wooden spoons you’ve sanded down. One day!

Clay throwing

There’s just something about watching the clay being manipulated that is so soothing. Seeing the shape of this vase evolve is a particular delight.

Kinetic sand

Kinetic sand, like slime-making and soap-cutting, is hardly anything new. But it’s always worth a feature when talking about soothing videos – the colours, sounds, shapes and manipulations make it top-tier soothing.

…and baby goats

Okay this is less soothing and more joyful but it’s a worthy deviation given how much delight it packs into two minutes.
